2019 Smokey Bear Poster Contest Winners Chosen
The Utah Associated Garden Clubs have chosen the winning entries in this year’s Smokey Bear poster contest. Because it is the 75th anniversary of Smokey Bear, all of the entries were required to depict Smokey this year (usually the children have a choice of drawing Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl). The contest is open to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, and it teaches children about the importance of preventing wildfires. Our state president, Connie MacKay, has enthusiastically promoted the contest in her neighborhood schools, and over 370 entries were received this year. So many beautiful and creative posters were received, it was hard to chose, but the winner from each grade showed remarkable artistic ability. The winning posters will be sent on to compete at the Rocky Mountain Regional level and then at the National level.
Update as of March 13, 2019: All five of our Utah winners, one for each grade, have been selected as the winning entries for the Rocky Mountain Region this year. We are very proud of our Utah students!
Update as of May 2019: Four of our Utah winners were selected as the national winners for their grade levels, and one of them was chosen as the grand prize winner overall: Congratulations to Penny Atkinson on her outstanding work!
