Flower of the Week: Species Tulips

Unlike the familiar hybrid tulips, species or wild tulips can be found growing in the wild, primarily in Central Asia. They are typically smaller than the hybrids but can be very charming in their own way. When planted in a sunny or partly sunny location, in soil that is moist during the spring but well-drained […]

Flower of the Week: Anemone blanda

There is nothing “bland” about this charming spring flower, which appears in shades of white, pink, or blue around the time that the mid-season tulips are blooming. Only 6″ tall, it grows from bulb-like structures called corms and dies down to the ground in summer. It will thrive in part sun or in the filtered […]

Arbor Day 2025

On Friday, April 25, 2025 we installed tree rings to protect the memorial trees in Sugar House Park from damage by lawn mowers and trimmers. Pictured here are UAGC Vice-President Leslie Moss and former UAGC President Geoff Ellis.

Spring Convention Successful

Everything went very smoothly for the 2025 UAGC Spring Convention held at the Sugar House Garden Center on 4.12.25. We had 6 of our UAGC clubs represented, including one of our newest clubs: Cache Garden Club. Thank you to all my helpers. Brenda Moore, NGC President, presented her “50 Shades of Green”, a message of […]

Flower of the Week: Golden Apeldoorn

In many climates, tulips are strictly a “one-and-done” flower; they will bloom the first spring but won’t come back again after that. In Utah, some (but not all) tulips have the potential to survive for many years, or “perennialize.” Golden Apeldoorn is one of them. If you give it moist but well-drained soil, sun or […]

Arbor Day Event

Arbor Day is Friday, April 25. At 10:00 AM that day we will gather to install tree rings and markers for our memorial trees behind the Garden Center in Sugar House Park. Pictured here is the flowering cherry tree planted in memory of Joy Hashimoto.

Flower of the Week: Ipheion

Native to Argentina and Uruguay, Ipheion uniflorum is possibly the least well-known of all the springtime flowering bulbs, but it is easy to grow along the Wasatch front and can add a cheerful splash of color to your flower border or alpine garden. It is only a few inches tall and does not seem to […]

Flower of the Week: Chionodoxa

Chionodoxa, or glory-of-the-snow, is not as well-known as some other spring bulbs, but it is just as beautiful. Growing only 4 inches tall, it blooms about the same time as the daffodils. The flowers are typically bright blue, but there is also a pink variety. Like all spring bulbs, it should be planted in the […]
